چکیده

During the 2007/2008 season, VERITAS was used for observations at E>200 GeV of several extragalactic nonblazar objects such as galaxy clusters, starburst and interacting galaxies, dwarf galaxies, and nearby galaxies. In these proceedings, we present preliminary results from our observations of dwarf galaxies and M87. Results from observation of other non-blazar sources are presented in separate papers in the proceedings.

Blazar Discoveries with VERITAS

Blazars are among the most energetic and violent objects in the universe. By observing blazars at very high energies (VHE, E > 100 GeV) we can better understand blazar emission mechanisms, jet structure, black hole accretion and the extragalactic background light (EBL). VERITAS, an array of four 12-meter diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes, performs VHE studies of blazars through ...

The VERITAS Blazar Key Science Project

The VERITAS array of 12-m atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona is currently the world’s most-sensitive detector of astrophysical very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) γ-rays. Approximately 25 blazars are known to emit VHE photons, and observations of blazars are one of the VERITAS collaboration’s key science projects (KSP). More than 50 of these objects have been observed with the a...

A new light boson from MAGIC observations?

Recent detection of blazar 3C279 by MAGIC has confirmed previous indications by H.E.S.S. that the Universe is more transparent to very-high-energy gamma rays than currently thought. This circumstance can be reconciled with observations of nearby blazars provided that photon oscillations into a very light Axion-Like Particle occur in extragalactic magnetic fields. The emerging “DARMA scenario” c...

Joint Multi-Wavelength Observations of Blazars with WIYN- VERITAS-IceCube

We describe the beginnings of a multi-wavelength analysis of TeV blazars using observations from the WIYN 0.9m optical telescope, the VERITAS gamma-ray telescope, and the AMANDA/IceCube neutrino detector. Optical data were taken for Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 1959+650 in coincidence with gamma-ray observations over a two-month period in AprJune 2006. In the future we hope to use a statistical an...

Extragalactic background light absorption signal in the TeV γ-ray spectra of blazars

Recent observations of the TeV γ-ray spectra of the two closest active galactic nuclei (AGNs), Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) and Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), by the Whipple and HEGRA collaborations have stimulated efforts to estimate or limit the spectral energy density (SED) of extragalactic background light (EBL) which causes attenuation of TeV photons via pair-production when they travel cosmological ...
